"Where are they now?"

My ancestors were of English, Irish and Scottish descent and were early settlers in South Australia and Western Australia. They included the families Baldwin-Greenwood, Hartley-White, Peake-Wilkins, and Marr-Owen.

The Union Club Hotel, Kalgoorlie

The Union Club Hotel is situated at 3 Macdonald Street Kalgoorlie, near to "Paddy Hannan's Tree" (where gold was first discovered at Kalgoorlie) and the Mt Charlotte Gold Mine (one of the northern mines of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile). The hotel was built in Federation Style in 1900.

My grandparents, William Henry Baldwin (1880-1943) and Minnie Ellen Hartley (1880-1975), moved to Kalgoorlie in 1928, initially running the "bar side" of the hotel and later managing the "house side" as well. My father assisted my grandfather in the business and, following my grandfather's death in 1943, my parents both played a major role in its management until the mid 1950's. The hotel was both a family business and a home for my parents and for my older sister Elaine, older brother John and me. We also resided for a time in a house situated behind the hotel in Cheetham Street.

Origins of my Anglo-Irish-Scottish Ancestors

My ancestors migrated to Australia during the mid to late 1800's and early 1900's. This site has been established to give descriptions of their lives in England, Ireland and Scotland, to record the circumstances of their migration, to describe their lives in the colonies and to list their many hundreds of descendants.

Descriptions are presented in four groups, under family headings: Baldwin (comprising the families Baldwin and Greenwood), Hartley (Hartley and White), Peake (Peake and Wilkins) and Marr ( Marr and Owen). Dr John Edward Peake, his wife Elizabeth and their family sailed to South Australia in the 1850's. Where are they now?

The title of my website is based on the opening line of "My Comrades", a poem written by my grandfather, Rowland Harold Peake (1888-1945). Rowland Peake wrote a number of poems, one of which "The Haunted Well" was published in the Perth (WA) weekly newspaper "The Sunday Times". In "My Comrades" he recalls his soldier comrades who fell during the 1915 Anzac action in Gallipoli and he asks the question "Where are they now?" I thought it to be a fitting title as a tribute to my grandfather and also because part of the answer to his question "Where are they now?" lies in the memories that our forebears leave with their relatives and their friends, together the records of their activities and achievements during their lives. Family history research, I believe, helps keep these memories and achievements alive and they provide a rich source of information for the growing numbers of their descendants.

Rowland Peake was born at Northam, WA. He was a plasterer by trade, but when the 1914-1918 Great War commenced he was among the first men from Northam to volunteer and joined the 10th Light Horse. He took his own much-loved horse (Bill) and trained at Blackboy Hill and then sailed with the first contingent in 1915. He served at Gallipoli as a Private but was wounded in his first encounter with the enemy on August 7, 1915 at the Battle of the Nek He was shot twice in his right leg and once in his left leg but was rescued with the help of his fellow soldiers; he later lost one of his legs. A letter to his wife Jane Peake describing the horrific battle scene was published in the Northam Advertiser on 29 September, 1915.

My grandfather died on 13/11/1945 in Fremantle (WA) when I was just short of my fifth birthday. I have no memory of my grandfather as he and my grandmother had grown apart following his return from Gallipoli and she had not encouraged interaction between us. The phrase "Where are they now?" could equally well apply to the paucity of any personal records of Rowland Peake. The official government records of birth, marriage and death and those of his military service have, of course, survived, but where are the family photographs of him with his wife and children, or enjoying a visit to the beach, or to some official function. They and and all his personal belongings appear to have been lost. Indeed, the photograph of Rowland Peake that appeared in the "The Weekend News" is the only photograph I have ever seen of my grandfather. I am sure there must have been other photographs of my grandfather that were taken with, or sent to, other Peake family members and it is my hope that some of these may have survived. However, Harold D. J. Peake wrote in his 1986 publication, entitled the "The Family of John E. and Jane Peake", that "It was only after much research that a photograph came into our possession. The photograph was found in records at the Battye Library from The Western Mail (of 22nd) October 1915."

Thank you for visiting my family history site. My name is Jenny Hudson and I am a descendant of UK immigrants, all of whom made their way to Australia during the mid to late 1800's and early 1900's. I was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia in the year 1940, the third child of a Lancashire-born father and an Australian-born mother.

I have started this website by posting information on the proposed structure and contents, and by providing some details and illustration relating to the Baldwin and Peake Family Groups, together with brief introductions to each of the other Family Groups. More detailed information will be added to the website as time permits.

I also hope that visitors to the site will get in contact with me with comments, suggestions, corrections, and additions.
