Journeys
James Goddard, transported as an “exile”
Hawley → Millbank & Pentonville prisons → Spithead (Portsmouth) → Hobart Town → Point Henry
Ship: Joseph Somes
From Millbank and Pentonville prisons, sailed from Spithead on the “Joseph Somes” on 4 June 1847 with 249 exiles, called at Hobart Town, and landed at Point Henry, Geelong on 24 September 1847.
The Peakes: South Australia, then WA
Oxfordshire → South Australia → Northam
Dr John Edward Peake, his wife Elizabeth and their family sailed to South Australia in the 1850s. Their son John Innes Peake (born in Oxfordshire) stayed about 15 years, then came to Western Australia in about 1865.
Mary Askew and Thomas Askew, assisted immigrants
Higham → London → Plymouth → Point Henry
Ship: Sir Robert Sale
Left London on 18 March and Plymouth on 1 April 1852 on the “Sir Robert Sale”, arriving at Point Henry, Geelong on 5 July 1852 after 95 days.
Ann Askew and William Siddall
Derbyshire → Liverpool → Port Phillip District (Melbourne)
Ship: Jas Carson
Married in Derbyshire in 1852 and sailed from Liverpool on the “Jas Carson”, landing in the Port Phillip District in October 1852, in time for Mary Askew’s wedding.
Henry Wilkins on the “Travancore”
England → Perth
Ship: Travancore
Henry Wilkins and his family sailed for Perth on the “Travancore”, but his wife and children died at sea. He met Bridget Kennedy, a fellow passenger from Ireland, and they married in Perth on 24 January 1853.
Mary Jane Goddard moves to Clunes
Murgheboluc → Clunes
Born in 1853 at Murgheboluc on the Barwon River, Mary Jane moved to the Clunes district with her mother after her father James Goddard died in 1860. She married William Hudson in 1873.
William Hudson on the “Star of India”
Tillshole → Liverpool → Melbourne → Sunny Brow
Ship: Star of India
Left Tillshole in Longsleddale and sailed from Liverpool on 23 December 1861 on the ship’s maiden voyage, arriving in Melbourne on 31 March 1862. He later farmed “Sunny Brow” near Clunes.
Thomas Plummer Clarke and Frances Stelfox go to Russia
Witton → Bolton → Vladimir district
Married in Bolton in 1865, they moved to Russia, where Thomas installed and maintained English-built steam engines in the textile mills of the Vladimir district. They raised nine children there over twenty years.
Bennett and Thomas Dunstan leave Cornwall
Porkellis → Clunes
With Cornish mining collapsing, the brothers left for Victoria at about 22 and 23, probably on the same ship, and settled at Clunes.
The Cuttles leave County Roscommon
Estersnow → Dunedin
After the famine, the two older sons left for New Zealand as assisted emigrants in 1876; John Cuttle, Ann Ekins/Cuttle and four more children followed in 1877, settling at Dunedin.
William Douglas of Londonderry
Londonderry → Dunedin
On the voyage out, Annie Marie Cuttle met fellow Irish emigrant William Douglas of Londonderry. They married in Dunedin in 1878.
William Dunstan and Eliza Jane Bolitho
Wendron → New Zealand (place not recorded) → Clunes
Married at Wendron Parish Church in 1876, they sailed with their two sons to New Zealand in about 1879, where their first daughter was born, then joined the Dunstans at Clunes in about 1880. William worked on the Clunes gold reefs.
Johannah Priske/Dunstan joins her sons

After her husband Bennett’s death in Cornwall, Johannah joined three of her sons at Clunes in 1880.
The Douglases move to Western Australia
Dunedin → New South Wales → Geraldton → Burbanks
With children David and Elizabeth Annie, the family moved to New South Wales and then, in the 1890s, to Western Australia. Elizabeth Annie trained as a teacher in Geraldton and in 1899 was appointed to the Burbanks School.
The Clarkes move to New Zealand
Vladimir district → Port Chalmers → Onehunga → Waihi (Martha mine)
Ship: Te Anau; SS Kaikoura; SS Hawea
Thomas and son Alfred reached Auckland from Sydney on the “Te Anau” on 14 July 1885. Frances and the other eight children came on the SS “Kaikoura” to Port Chalmers and on to Auckland on the SS “Hawea”, about 9 January 1886. Thomas later managed the battery at the Martha mine, Waihi.
Thomas Hudson goes west to the goldfields
Sunny Brow → Boulder
William and Mary Jane’s fourth child left “Sunny Brow” for Western Australia in 1899, drawn by the Eastern Goldfields. The family home was at 19 Millen Street, Boulder.
William George Clarke comes to Western Australia
Wellington → Leonora district → Burbanks → Kalgoorlie
Sailed from Wellington for the Boer War on 31 March 1900; after his discharge in 1901 he came to WA with his brother Robert, working in the Leonora district, then Burbanks, and moved to Kalgoorlie about 1915. In 1928 he became research metallurgist at the Kalgoorlie School of Mines.
Jane Everson Marr comes to WA
Everton → Northam
Born in Everton, Liverpool, Jane came by ship from England to Western Australia in 1906, and married Rowland Harold Peake at Northam in 1908.
Rowland Peake to Gallipoli
Northam → Blackboy Hill camp → Fremantle → The Nek
Ship: Mashobra
One of the first Northam volunteers, Rowland trained at Blackboy Hill with his horse Bill and sailed on 8 February 1915 with the 10th Light Horse (from Fremantle on the Mashobra; a family letter recalls Albany). He was wounded at the Nek on 7 August 1915 and later lost a leg.
The Baldwins: Colne to Kalgoorlie
Colne → Naval Base → Kalgoorlie (Union Club Hotel)
William Henry Baldwin, Minnie Ellen Hartley and children Sydney and Minnie came by ship to Perth in the early 1920s and ran the original Naval Base Hotel, then moved to Kalgoorlie in 1928 to run the Union Club Hotel.

At St Mary’s Church, Longsleddale. They farmed Tillshole and Sadgill at the head of the valley.
