Descendants of the Children of Thomas Hudson and Isabella Green

Introduction

This page lists the descendants of the children of Thomas Hudson and Isabella Green, excluding those of William Hudson (1827-1908) whose Australian descendants are listed elsewhere.

Some uncertainty surrounds the dates of birth and death of Thomas Hudson. My colleague Ted Davis found that a Thomas Hudson age 63 was buried at Longsleddale on 24 July 1846.  This would indicate a life span for Thomas of (~1783-1846). An IGI record of a baptism of a Thomas Hudson, son of John and Jane Hudson, at Bampton on 17 Dec 1782, may be relevant. 

Isabella Green/Hudson (~1794-?) was baptised at Bampton on 27 April 1794, and Thomas and Isabella were married on 19 April 1815 at St Mary's Church, Longsleddale.

Contact During the Late 1800s and Early to Mid 1900s

There is scant evidence remaining of the communication between William Hudson (and/or his Australian descendants) and those Hudson relatives that remained in England. George Smyth of Ballarat, Victoria wrote to a Mrs George Hudson, at “Low Park”’ Endmoor (near Kendal) until about the 1950s.  A photograph of George and Margaret Hudson and their family was given to me by Marion Charles. The photograph of the family group was taken in about 1915, and has George Hudson (48), Margaret Hudson (45) and their children James Edmund (21), Margaret Isabel (19), George Henry (17), Thomas William (15), John Dogherty (13), Richard Johnston (10) and Mary Agnes (6).  James Edmund, a member of the Yeomen, was killed in the Dardanelles shortly after the photograph was taken. Marion Charles was not  successful in her attempt to find the family during a trip to the Lake District in about 1980..

 I also have a remembrace card (presumably sent to my grandfather Thomas Hudson) for a Robert Hudson of “Orrest Farm”, Windermere, who died in 1913, aged 60 years.   It is probable that he was one of the brothers Robert (17) and James (13) listed as living with their uncle Thomas (54) and wife Margaret (48) at Middle Sadgill during the 1871 census.   Robert Hudson (27) is believed to be the son of James Hudson (~1826-); he was with his wife Isabella (34) and daughter Agnes Elizabeth (3) at Thomshow at the 1881 census.

Recent Interactions with English Hudson Relatives and residents of Longsleddale

As a result of several trips to the Lake District in the period between 1972 and 1998, some communication  has also taken place between the present owners of Tillshole (Martin and Sylvia Fishwick), Sadgill (Mr and Mrs Fishwick), Wadshow (Mr and Mrs Bennett of Middale), and Stockdale (Mr and Mrs ?Andrews). In August 1994, I provided details of Hudson occupancy at Tillshole to Sylvia Fishwick for inclusion in a poster on Tillshole she was preparing as part of a “Festival of the Valley of Longsleddale” to be held in St Mary’s Church.

Contact with  Belle (Jeanne) Hudson/Powell, a Descendant of James Hudson (~1826-1868)

Mrs Jeanne Hudson/Powell, was born in Cumbria and is now aresident of Perth, Western Australia. She is the great granddaughter of James Hudson (~1826- ), the immediate elder brother of my great grandfather William Hudson (1827-1908).   Her husband, David Powell, has been researching the Hudson family from Longsleddale and surrounding districts, and in 2002 Jeanne was kind enough to send to me a copy of this compilation, and to provide me with some details of her family life in Cumbria . I have attempted to integrate the BMD details from this compilation with my own research data in presenting a very provisional list of descendants of James Hudson (below).

Contact with Pamela Fell, a Descendant of Robert Hudson (1830-)

On 9 May 2003, I had an email from Pamela Fell in which she said she had "information from Parish Records taking the family back to 1783", and asked if I was still interested in the Hudson family from Longsleddale. Following my positive response, we exchanged information on the Hudson family, and she provided me with data on her line from her great grandfather Robert Hudson, the next younger brother of my great grandfather William Hudson. Like Jeanne Hudson/Powell, Pamela Fell and I are at the same generation level and are third cousins.

Pamela was able to provide additional details of births, marriages and deaths for the line of descendants from Robert Hudson, as well as some details of the lives of family members. Some of these details are included in the compilation below.

Descendants of the Children of Thomas Hudson and Isabella Green/Hudson

Thomas Hudson and Isabella Green/Hudson had ten children. With the possible exception of the first born child, George Hudson, who was baptised at Bampton, his mothers birthplace, the children were born at, or nearby, Tillshole, Longsleddale, and they were baptised at St Mary's Church, Longsleddale. The assistance of Belle (Jeanne) and David Powell is gratefully acknowledged for providing me with some new information on the descendants of Thomas Hudson and Isabella Green (shown as Powell) and in particular information on the descendants of James Hudson. Pamela Fell is likewise thanked for providing me with a list of some of the descendants of Robert Hudson. It is recognized, however, that this list of descendants is far from complete.

Baptised 14 Jun 1815, Bampton. He was unmarried age 45 at the 1861 census. George Hudson died age 55 at Longsleddale (Powell)

2. Thomas Hudson

(~1816-1894)

Born Tillshole. Baptised 18 Nov 1816, St Mary's Longsleddale. Was resident at Middle Sadgill with Margaret Taylor at the 1861 census.   He married her before the 1871 census.   They remained at Middle Sadgill until after the 1881 census.   There is no record of children, although in 1871 their nephews Robert and James Hudson were living with them.

Thomas Hudson died age 77 on 02 Oct 1894 (Powell). Margaret Hudson, widow of Thomas Hudson, late of Sadgill, died age 79 on 19 Feb 1902 (Powell)

3. Mary Hudson

(~1818-1891)

Born Tillshole. Baptised 22 Feb 1818, St Mary's Longsleddale. Mary was unmarried age 33 at Middle Sadgill at the 1851 census.

In 1857, Mary married John Tugman, farmer of Little Eskrigg End, Old Hutton . John Tugman died age 77 on 06 Jan 1891. Mary Hudson/Tugman died age 74 in 1891(Powell).

4. John Hudson

Born Tillshole. Baptised 11 Oct 1819, St Mary's Longsleddale. John does not appear on any census record (he would have been ~22 in 1841).

John Hudson died in 1860, death registered at Kendal in the June quarter (Powell).

Born Tillshole. Baptised 05 Aug 1821, St Mary's Longsleddale. Agnes was living with her family at Tillshole age 15+ at the 1841 census.   No other records.

Part of this summary on the Descendants of James Hudson was provided to me by Jeanne and David Powell, and their contribution is gratefully acknowledged.

Edmund Hudson was born Tillshole. Baptised 02 Nov 1823, St Mary's Longsleddale. Edmund married Eleanor Rogerson (~1839-1875) about 1858. The following christenings for children of Edmund Hudson and Eleanor Rogerson/Hudson of Longsleddale appear in the IGI records:

Edmund Hudson and Eleanor appear at Lower Sadgill on the census record for 1861 (Edmund Hudson, farmer, age 44 and Eleanor Hudson, wife, age 22), but neither of the children Thomas (c 04 Apr 1859) or John (c 14 Jun 1860) appear on the census record. Presumably, they died prior to the census.

Thomas Hudson (second) was born at Sadgill on 24 Oct 1863, followed by George in 1866, and Isabella on 05 Mar 1869 (Powell).

In the 1871 census, the family is still at Lower Sadgill with the parents and their children Agnes (9), Thomas (7), George (4) and Isabella (2), together with two servants.

Their third daughter, Mary Hudson, was born at Sadgill in 1872, and their last child and fourth daughter, Eleanor, was born at Sadgill in 1874 (Powell).

On 11 Feb 1875, Edmund Hudson died at age 51. His death was followed three months later by that of his wife Eleanor on 09 May 1875 at the age of 36. On 16 Jul 1875, Thomas Hudson became the Administrator and Legal Guardian to Edmund and Eleanor's six children. The family agreed that Thomas and his wife Margaret would foster George and Isabella. Mary Hudson/Tugman, their aunt, would foster Thomas and Mary, and Agnes and Eleanor would live with their grandparents, Richard and Agnes Rogerson (information from Jeanne and David Powell, 16 May 2002).

The 1881 census confirms that the children George (14) and Isabella (12) were at Middle Sadgill with their uncle Thomas Hudson (64) and aunt Margaret (58).

Agnes Hudson, the eldest daughter, died age 27 on 10 Apr 1889.

George Hudson (~1867-) married Margaret (~1870-) in about 1893/94 and had seven children: James Edmund Hudson , Margaret Isobel Hudson (~1896-), George Henry Hudson (~1898-), Thomas William Hudson (~1900-), John Dogherty Hudson (~1902-), Richard Johnston Hudson (~1905-), and Mary Agnes Hudson (~1909-).

Mrs Doris Hudson/Smyth, of Ballarat in Victoria, was a cousin of George Hudson. The Smyth family corresponded with the family of George Hudson at "Low Park" Endmoor (near Kendal). After the death of George Hudson, age 75, on 28 Jan 1942, the correspondence continued between the Smyth family and Mrs Margaret Hudson until about the 1950s. A photograph of the family was taken in 1915, prior to the departure of James Edmund Hudson for service with the Yeomen at the Dardenelles. Mary Hudson died age 24 on 15 Apr 1896; Thomas Hudson died age 70 on 04 May 1934 (Powell).

7. James Hudson

(~1826-1868)

Much of this summary on the Descendants of James Hudson was provided to me by Belle (Jeanne) and David Powell, and some also from Pamela Fell. Their contributions are gratefully acknowledged.

James Hudson was born at Tillshole. Baptised 02 Apr 1826, St Mary's Longsleddale.

James appears at Tillshole (age 25) on the 1851 census.

James married Agnes Walker ( on 26 Apr 1852. Witnesses were William Hudson (my great grandfather) and Mary Hudson). James was a bailiff at Sleddale Hall, then moved to the valley of Kentmere.

James and Agnes had three boys (Thomas, Robert and James) and one girl (Mary). Thomas was born at Kentmere on 13 Dec 1852 and christened on 23 Jan 1853;  Robert was born at Casterton on 13 Mar 1854 and christened on 09 Apr 1854; James was born at Scalthwaiterigg on 12 Apr 1857 and christened at St George's, Kendal on 10 May 1857; and Mary was christened at St George's, Kendal on 11 Aug 1861.

IGI christening records for  for Robert and James Hudson are:

At the 1871 census, Robert Hudson, age ?17, and James Hudson, age 13,  were at Middle Sadgill, with their uncle Thomas Hudson (54) and aunt Margaret (48).

At the 1881 census, Robert was at Thomshow (age 27) and married to Isabella (34), with daughter Agnes Elizabeth (3). He died at Orrest Farm, near Windermere on 03 May 1943 and was interred at Windermere Cemetery on 06 May 1943 (see the copy of his bereavement card).

Robert's elder brother Thomas Hudson was the grandfather of my third cousin Belle (Jeanne) Hudson/Powell. Her father, James Hugh Hudson, was the fourth child and first son of Thomas Hudson. His  younger brother, William, went to Canada.

Jeanne Hudson/Powell; lived with her parents on Near Orrest Farm , where the family had a milk round; her father died in the mid 1940s, when her younger brother was age 10. The family left the farm in 1949. Jeanne married and left for Australia in 1956.

Robert Hudson was born at Tillshole, and baptised on 23 May 1830 at St Mary's Longsleddale.

At the time of the 1861 census, Robert Hudson was at Tillshole, age 31.

Robert married Agnes Kitchen in 1864. Their four children were Agnes Isabella Hudson, born at Ubarrow Hall in 1865 and christened at St May's Longsleddale, Thomas Kitchen Hudson, born ~ 1867/68 at High House, Helsington and Christened at Helsington, Mary Elizabeth Hudson, born 01 Jan 1871, and Margaret Ann christened at Helsington on 08 Mar 1874.

 Robert is not listed on the 1871 census, but appears at Tillshole for the 1881 census, and is listed as widower and farmer, age 49, accompanied by his three children Agnes Isabella (16), Thomas Kitching (13) and Mary Elizabeth (10). At the time of the1881 census, Margaret Ann was living at Ubarrow Hall with her grandparents, Thomas and Agnes Kitchen.

As indicated above, the family lived at Ubarrow Hall from 1864 (where Robert Hudson was a"husbandsman", Helsington from before the birth of their son Thomas Kitching in 1867/68, and was at Helsington in 1871 and 1874  for the births of Mary Elizabeth and Margaret Ann. In 1880, Agnes Kitchen/Hudson died at Tillshole  and she was buried at St Mary's Longsleddale on 11 Mar 1880. In the 1881 census, Robert was listed as a "farmer" at Tillshole.

Agnes Isabella Hudson (1865-)  married John Graham and in 1901 they were living in Bowness on Windermere with their two daughters, Agnes (born in 1893 in Kendal) and Maggie (born in 1896 in Windermere); also living with them were Agnes’s sister (Pamela Fell’s grandmother) Mary Elizabeth Hudson (1871-1956) and her son Fred.

Pamela Fell provided the following information on how her grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Hudson overcame initial difficulties in her life to establish a successful career as a midwife and, later, a wife and mother:  "Around 1893/94, my grandmother was engaged to be married to a farmer’s son. He died suddenly, and my grandmother, who by then was pregnant, found her life in ruins – such was the social stigma of illegitimacy in the 1890s.   Her prospective in-laws were very upset, not only about losing their son, but also about losing their prospective daughter-in-law and grandchild.   Family verbal history has it that they paid for her to go to London to train as a midwife.   She then delivered many babies in and around Windermere for the next few years. Her proudest claim as that she never lost a mother or a child.   In December 1901, she married Robert Wills, a widower and farmer.   In 1904 she had twin girls and called them after her sisters; the first-born was Agnes (my mother) and her twin was Margaret.   Mary Elizabeth then had two sons, Joseph and Harold.   I do remember her from my childhood. She died in 1956, aged 85, when she came to our house (for) her annual month long visit.

Born Tillshole. Baptised 23 Dec 1832, St Mary's Longsleddale. Joseph appears at Tillshole, age 18, on the 1851 census.
